Mr. and Mrs. William Anthony and Mra PORTAIT OF MY HILDKEN HE EXHIBITION of Albert yEesnard's paintings and etchings In New Tork and his presence in this country, which has created such a furore of Interest and expitemerit, brings to mind keen recollections of the wonderful show of his work that the Cincinnati Museum had here 11 years ago. Nor can it be forgotten that the metropolis, which is now leaving no stone unturned in its effort to honor the distinguished French painter, at that time passed over an opportunity to show the exhibition that, in some respects, outclassed the present one in quality and variety. The exhibition which was here in 1913 was assembled and brought over for the Museum by M.

Jean Guiffrey, and was shown in Chicago, St Louis and here in Cincinnati. There were about 25 paintings, besides the wonderful collection of pastels, sketches for his decoration of the French Government buildings, to which his great talent was put to such splendid use, cartoons and a number of superb many of the same prints that are at present being shown at the Kappel Galleries in New Tork, and which areconsidered to be really more worthy of his great reputation than the present exhibition of paintings. Besnard Is the thorough representative of French Academicism as it exists, tempered by the impressionism that enlightened it 20 or 30 years ago. This is hts first visit to America, and, therefore, fraught with great interest both for him and for us. He came to serve on the Jury for the international show at the Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania.

He is now 74 years of age, rich In achievement and honor, and his visit cannot fail to be of benefit both to French and American art. i Wilbur G. Adam, one of our younger artists, is having an exhibition of paintings and monotypes at the Trax-el Gallery until the 26th of the month. There is something very sound about Mr. Adams's painting, and a definite feeling of good draftsmanship and understanding.

His exhibition includes a variety of subjects land bers of the Hyde Park Symphony Club at their home, on Observatory place. and Mrs, L. McUuroo, of Pap 1 scapes, portraits, still life and figure studies. His landscapes were painted last summer at Estes Park, where he spent several months. One of the large landscapes, which he calls "Entrance to Spruce Canyon," is per haps of the handsomest. It is a dramatic rendering of purple lights and brilliant sunshine.

The warm rays of the sun, bursting through the clouds for Just a moment, have turned every thing to gold, and the cool, purple shadows of the trees and rocks give strong contrast. "Near Estes a smaller landscape that stands out In the group, is a sparkling rendering of sky and rich luminous mountains that-have fine feeling of mass and distance. Of his four or five portraits. the one of a young man, "Clarence, is the finest It is a good likeness, well drawn and painted surely and simply, with no struggle for effect, but depending solely on its fine draftsmanship and firm handling. His still life tudles are another version of his feeling for from and surface.

We recognize the large study with the pumpkin and fruit that he had in the Art Club show, and which is so well painted. rangement on Figured Blue" is a very interesting study of different tex tures and surfaces and a nice ar rangement "Sprouted Onions" Is one of the pleasantest In color and design, His monotypes are lovely and It is too bad that he has not shown more of them. A beautiful little nude, called "Morning Silhouette," Is an exquisite study of figure and drapery and an interesting design in light and darks. The one-color monotype, "West Fourth Street," showing the vista with the skyscraper, makes us wish to see more of the same type. It is a good show with a variety of subject and an underlying feeling of earnestness and determination of purpose.
