41 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER LOCAL NEWS TBNE THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2004 C9 Lives remembered Herbert Edelman, executive, hobbyist By Rebecca Goodman The Cincinnati Enquirer MADEIRA Herbert L. Edelman, a former executive with the Levey Division of Cities Service Co. in Cincinnati, died Friday at Christ Hospital after a brief illness. The Madeira resident was 82. Mr.

Edelman spent more than 50 years in the printing ink and pigment industry. The companies he worked for "created the color pigments that went into everything from to bread wraps to cosmetics the sort of Mr. Edelman things you don't really think that much about when you're looking at them," said his daughter, Meredith Raffel of Mason. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Edelman graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Navy in 1942.

He served aboard the USS Birmingham during World War II. He met June Strand, his future wife, while stationed in Sydney, Australia. After the war, Mr. Edelman studied chemical engineering at Polytechnic University, Brooklynand worked for an ink manufacturer in Florida. He moved to Montgomery to become vice president of national sales at Levey, which made and marketed ink and lithographic plates, in 1973.

Mr. Edelman moved to Ramsey, in 1980 to work for Sun Chemicals and retired to Madeira four years ago. An amateur photographer, he enjoyed photographing flowers around the world. "My father was one of the most wellrounded people I have ever known," his daughter said. "He was able to balance his career, his family, his love of art and exploration of new things." He was preceded in death by a son, Mark.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 57 years, June; another daughter, Leslie Carlotti of Greenwich, seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A memorial service is 3 p.m. Friday at Blue Ash Presbyterian Church, 4309 Cooper Road. Memorials: Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242. E-mail Tattoo: Permission required From Page C1 partment for Public Health.

Sam Mello, 20, has both earlobes pierced, as well as a piercing in his inner ear right above the lobes. Mello said he's considering a tongue or lip piercing. He agrees with the new state law. "I think it adds legitimacy to the business," said Mello, an Independence resident and student at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and an aspiring Web designer. He's holding back on the tongue or lip piercing to consider the effect on his business image.

Health departments will inspect body-piercing studios twice a year. In addition, artists must be registered (fee is $20) and adhere to certain safety standards. Steam autoclaves will be tested to make sure they kill microorganisms. The licensing fee for tattoo and bodypiercing studios is $100. The Northern Kentucky Health Department occasionally gets calls from angry parents whose children got tattooed or pierced without their knowledge, Marksberry said.

E-mail Tattooing and body piercing As of March 2004, 34 states have laws prohibiting adolescents from getting tattoos; 26 states have laws against body piercing. Twenty-five states have laws that prohibit both. Two states, Illinois and Texas, have laws prohibiting tongue splitting, but these laws are not specific to minors. Provisions allowing adolescents to get tattoos or body piercing with parental or guardian consent are in place in most of the states that have laws in effect. Many of the laws across the country establish financial penalties or prison time for people who violate the law.

In Louisiana, for example, a person found guilty of tattooing or body piercing a minor without the proper consent can be fined $100- $500 or can be imprisoned for one to 12 months.
