91 1 tjtVtyt iritMl 31 Ruffian: Best Of 3-Year -Old Crop? fea Monday. June 9, 1975 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER If you're going to college to be somebody, start with Army ROTC! NEW YORK (AP) Now that the Triple Crown has shown that this year's 3.year-old colts and geldings are unable to dominate one another, thoroughbred racing faces a most interesting question. Can they beat Ruffian, who has been unbeatable against other 3-year-old fillies? After watching Willie Shoemaker riding Avatar to victory Saturday in the Belmont Stakes, with Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure second and Preakness winner Master Derby third, Gov. Huge Carey of New York said in the Belmont Park winner's circle: "Willie has given us a great thrill today. I suggest these colts settle the issue in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga and run against Ruffian." RUFFIAN'S IMMEDIATE goal is to capture New York's filly Triple Crown by winning the 11 -mile Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park June 21.

But trainer Frank Whiteley and owner Stuart Janey have indicated she will run against the colts in the August 16 Travers. Just who her male opposition will be is uncertain. "He's had a hard campaign and de serves a long rest," said owner Arthur A. Seeligson Jr. after Avatar's neck victory over Foolish Pleasure in the $193,600 Belmont.

The colt, who was second in the Derby and fifth in the Preakness, and Mrs. Robert Lehmann's Master Derby left New York together by airplane Sunday. Master Derby, who had been fourth in the Derby, was to deplane at Louisville while Avatar was to go on to Los Angeles and Hollywood Park. Trainer Smiley Adams indicated that Master Derby's next start might be the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park or the American Derby at Chicago. Also leaving for Hollywood Park was Frank McMahon's Diabolo, who set most of the pace in the Belmont before finishing fourth.

He had been third in both the Derby and Preakness. As for Foolish Pleasure, whose home base is Belmont Park, trainer Leroy Jolley said Sunday: "THERE ARE three options stay in New York, go to California or maybe Chicago. We'll think about it a while, and come up with an answer in six or seven days." The John L. Greer-owned colt, who was voted the best of the 2-year-old colts and geldings last year, also finish- ed second in the Preakness, beaten a length. Avatar's Belmont victory split the Triple Crown three ways for the first time since 1970 when Dust Commander won the Derby, Personality the Preakness and High Echelon the Belmont.

But Tommy Doyle, trainer of Avatar, said he believes this is a good crop of 3-year-olds because he knows his colt has lots of ability but still could not win the Derby or Preakness. That ability was much in evidence Saturday as Avatar, given a masterful ride by Shoemaker, took the lead from Master Derby with about an eighth of a mile left. Master Derby had taken over from a tiring Diabolo at the quarter Avatar has a tendency to loaf when on the lead but Shoemaker urged him home ahead of the onrushing Foolish Pleasure. It was The Shoe's fifth Belmont triumph in eight tries. Avatar's fifth victory in 12 starts this year he also won the Santa Anita Derby was achieved in 2:28 1-5 and was worth $116,160 to Seeligson.

He paid $28.40, $8 and $5 to his backers in a crowd of 60,321. Completing the order of finish were Prince Thou Art, Singh, Just the Time, Nalees Rial to and Syllabus. A 100-foot chip-in for an eagle-three on the ninth hole proved the catylist for his first tour victory in six years. "I got the right kind of kicks and bounces, and at key moments I made big putts," Floyd said. LOOKING BACK at his long dry spell, he added, "I worked pretty hard and I felt on two or three occasions I should have won and I didn't." Although he didn't win last year, he had his biggest money season ever, winning $119,000.

Floyd said his wife, Maria, is ex-' pecting their second child and added, "Lord knows we need the money." Also, he pointed out, "Today is my mothers birthday, so I guess it was a nice gift." "I'M SURE the blinkers helped him," said jockey Bill Clinch.

"But when we were on the lead and coming down the stretch Count Paco checked himself momentarily when he saw the starting gate on the inside of the rail. "I thought maybe that would hurt us, but it didn't. He kept running." It's a good thing Count Paco did because 3-5 favorite Visier was right on his tracks. Count Paco, however, won by a length and a quarter while making the trip of a mile and 70 yards in 1:44. Sunday's crowd of 8647 wagered $728,299.

CHILDREN WHO walk along Bridgetown Road to school are breaking school policy, because every student attending the school is provided bus transportation, advised Charles A. A fence dividing the school property keeps children from running into Bridgetown Road, he added. "School Entrance" signs have been installed to bring motorists' attention to the entrance. John Paris, the American Soccer League team's general manager, said Sunday that de-fenseman Fred Rivera has been fired for failure to attend practices and for lackluster game performances and that forward Carmelo Capurro has "resigned for personal reasons." Paris would not elaborate on Carmelo's departure. Carmelo had been a member of the Comets since the team first joined the ASL in 1972. NICK CAPURRO, Carmelo's father and the Comets coach, said "it has nothing to do with me or the team. He has other things he wants to do and play amateur ball." Of Rivera, Capurro said "he was fired on grounds of not producing. He was not there.

He says always, 'this hurts, that hurts, everything Capurro added that the Salvador native was a standout performer for the Comets last season at defense "but not this year." The entire squad had been fined "10 of their salary," according to Paris, for lack of effort in last week's game at Cleveland. They played much better Saturday, Capurro and Paris said. By virtue of their 3-1 victory over Boston Saturday night coupled with Cleveland's 4-2 loss to Connecticut, the Comets moved to within one point of Midwest Division leading Cleveland. The Comets play an exhibition game against a team from Germany Thursday night at Trecht-er Stadium. Their next ASL contest is Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
