Bailey, Terri wniie is "tne Oldest woman In the World," and Leonard John Crowfoot Is Tom Thumb. SANDY IS a native of Davton. but he did not frequent the Kenley Players when he lived there.

"I was a kid and Kenley was downtown high-brow stuff to me. I didn't think people like me went to those high-class places. It takes awhile to grow up and learn that the Tri-County Northgate Mariemont Studio Florence iCasviet'i i 771-4M4 36S-5585 271-3237 S79-3444 S2S-M00 I Kl. it HI, Wl, MarW-i-rU: tn 7:0.. i 1 fA VERIC BUR DON HS CHAS CHANDLER vrff ALAN PRICE rM j) JOHN STEELE HILTON VALENTINE MONDAY AUGUST 8-8PM theater Is for everybody." Sandy has Just completed a run on Broadway as the Pirate King in "Pirates of Penzance." He has been acting professionally for 17 years and he wants to show people that he has more to offer than playing Andy Travis on WKRP.

"I learned a lot from that role. I learned to be subtle in front of the camera. And I must have been believable asastatlon manager because announcers kept sending me their resumes. But I'm a much higher energy person than Travis. I'm Just not a 'shucks, gosh' kind of guy.

That's why I'm so excited by I want to show that I've got the kind of energy that can translate to the big screen, the movie screen. "That's why I'm doing theater now. I couldn't show anything or learn anything from the kind of television scripts I've been offered, with screaming women and squealing tires. I don't want a short career as a television talk show celebrity. I want to be around when I'm 70, like BY OWEN FINDSEN Enquirer Reporter Gary Sandy looks like Andy Travis.

And talks like Andy Travis. But he's determined to show the world that he's not Andy Travis any more. Right now, In fact, he's Phlneas Taylor Barnum, America's most flamboyant showman. As station manager Andy Travis, Sandy was the easy-going straight man on the TV comedy about Cincinnati's lowest rating radio station. "Doing 'WKRP In Cincinnati' was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, but playing Barnum Is the toughest thing I've ever done and I'm really proud of It." Sandy plays the title role In the Tony Award winning musical "Barnum," for Kenley Players In Dayton, Ohio Tuesday through Sunday, July 24.

"People In theater will tell you that the role. of Barnum Is the toughest role In musical theater. You're on stage all the way through. Nobody can ball you out If you flop. You've got to carry the whole show," Sandy said In a telephone Interview from his hotel the morning after opening night.

"Right now I keep thinking 'do I really have to go out there tonight and do It "AT ONE point, at the end of the first act, I have to sing a song while walking from one side of the stage to the other on a tightrope, 7 feet above the stage. The stage crew has 45 seconds to get that rig set up and I have to walk It after I've been on stage for an hour and 45 minutes. Last night my legs felt like rubber, but I Just kept thinking that If I fall off I'll Just have to get up and go back to the beginning. That kept me going." Sandy talked with non-stop enthusiasm about "Barnum," repeating again and again "You've Just got to see It. If you miss this one you have really missed something.

"It's hard to describe. People think Its going to be like going to the circus. Well, It Is. There's high wire and clowns and a three-ring circus going on all the time. But It's also the whole life of a man and you've got to remember that Barnum didn't get involved with 1 9 8 3 "DEURIO US' TOUR I I I America!" Sandy said he Is the first actor to play the part with an Idea toward aging the character during the course of the play. "There are no makeup changes, no wigs or anything like that, but on Broadway they ignored the fact that the man was supposed to be growing older."
