September 2. Friends iDeatli Notices iDeatl? Notices Sharn. collier lodd, Nicnoias may caH Friday at 6:30 P.M. at man schools West Hi Plunges Into The Elder Pit For 'Home' Debut BY MICHAEL PAOLERCIO Sports Reporter If supposed to be Western Hills' home game, but It's being played at Elder. And Panther coach Ray Bachus doesn't mind one bit.

"I like playing in our own back yard," smiled the muscular Elder coach. "I'd like to play all 10 games at Elder." On the West Side of town, Elder Stadium is better known as "The Pit." And, because of greater seating capacity than West Hi's McCarthy Stadium, The Pit will host the city's longest running high school rivalry today at 8 p.m. before an anticipated packed house. This year's edition marks the 53rd meeting between the all-boys Catholic school and the West Side public school. Elder holds a commanding advantage in the series (37-14-1) and has won 21 of the last 22 games.

Ironically, the last Thanksgiving Day game was West Hi's last victory, a 6-0 decision in 1978. MUSTANG COACH Pat O'Brien will be most concerned about the passing game when either offensive team takes the field. "As a sheer passing team, year in and year but, Elder has to be one of the best in the state," O'Brien said. O'Brien had a good passing quarterback when preseason drills started in Kevin Porter. But the junior went down with a cracked collarbone in the St.

Xavier scrimmage and will be out for an indefinite period. The Mustangs have had to throw in sophomore Lincoln Adams. "Lincoln has real good potential," O'Brien said. "He's a pretty fair passer for a sophomore. He's a smart young man and picks things up fast." The Panthers will counter with a strong passing game.

Senior quarterback Dan Dalton was the quarterback last season, but was displaced in the second scrimmage by senior Harry Westerkamp. This year Dalton is ready. He'll have a horde of superb receivers as targets in fullback Don Eckstein, flanker Dave Autenrieb, halfback Tim Bleh and halfback Bryon Pitchford. Physically, this year's Panthers will be the biggest team Bachus has had since 1977. His entire offensive line begins its third year together.

"Size-wise, they'll be considerably bigger than we are, but I think we'll be right in there," O'Brien said. Landmark Cuts Back Schedule Lee Morris, a football coach at Landmark Christian High School, announced Thursday that the Class A school will cut back its varsity football schedule to four games this season following significant losses in personnel. The Golden Eagles dropped their Miami Valley Conference schedule and will keep only the following games: Sept. 5 At St. Rita's; Oct.

9 Hammond Baptist; Oct. 31 Mississinawa Valley; and Nov. 7 Louisville Beth Haven. Marty Martin, Landmark's head coach, resigned three days ago. Tom Smith has replaced him.

"It's been a nightmare. I couldn't believe it," Morris said. "We had 44 sign up in the spring. Two or three did not come out, a couple were injured, one transferred out, several couldn't come up with tuition. We did not have enough young men to field a team.

"We got to the point where our young kids were not ready physically to compete," he said. Instead of playing one or two MVC schools, the Landmark administration decided to drop the entire league schedule. "We felt we could compete with the four teams left on a varsity level," Morris said.
