WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER Lives remembered Mother of 7 never stopped helping others Durchholz craved knowledge By Lori Kurtzman Patricia Durchholz cared so much for animals she even fed the raccoons. She would take in any sick cat and once raised a wild baby bird to maturity. It followed her around the yard as if she were its mother. But animals took up only a corner of her heart. "Mom was the soft spot of all." said Amy Farr, 45, the youngest of Mrs.

Durchholz's seven children. Mrs. Durchholz died March 10 in Loveland after suffering from Alzheimer's disease. She was 74. Two of her daughters remembered her Tuesday as a big-hearted, never-snobby intellectual, a woman who always seemed to favor the underdog and once invited a down-on-her luck housekeep er to the family's Thanksgiving dinner.

She treasured people women especially and encouraged her children to experience the differences in humanity by, for instance, celebrating Passover in her Catholic household. "She had so many friends who were just from all walks of life," said daughter Theresa Hill, 48. Perhaps that was because she had walked in so many lives herself. Mrs. Durchholz, who grew up in Walnut Hills, lost her father at a young age and had to help raise her two younger brothers, Farr said.

She didn't graduate from high school. She married Richard Durchholz, an engineer who died in 1982, and raised their five girls and two boys in Loveland, spending hours working in her lush gardens, the children digging beside her. When Farr was in kindergarten, Mrs. Durchholz, at age 30, decided to get her GED. And then her bachelor's degree.

And ultimately a doctorate in sociology from the University of Cincinnati. Later she embarked on years of grueling research to produce a book, "Defining Mission," which documents the history of the Comboni missionaries. It's such a complex text that Hill struggled to read it. But she never flaunted her intellect, her daughters said. She still spent hours in her gardens, digging up perennials to give to her friends, and cooked a phenomenal stuffing loaded with mushrooms (the secret to which, she confessed, was a pound of butter).

"She loved imagery of people and just the beauty of ordinary things," Farr said. She is survived by her seven children: Kim Benz, Leslie Chamberlain, Mark Durchholz, Andrea Harpen, Anthony Durchholz, Hill and Farr. Her funeral was Friday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. To remember their mother, the children plan to plant acres of lavender swirling around the little home in Clarksville where Mrs. Durchholz spent some of her later years.

"We thought we would take the place and just offer it up as a place for people to come and retreat, as kind of a memorial to Mom," Hill said. In its unanimous resolution adamantly adopted Monday, council members said the bridge benagainst having efits commerce and travelers the I-75 bridge throughout the Midwest and Southeast.

They said a toll sys- tem would clog the region's other interstate highways, including I-275 and I-471, and added it's unfair for local users to bear the responsibility for replacing a bridge on a major interstate. Copies of the resolution are being sent to U.S. Senators Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnell, Congressman Geoff Davis, Gov. Steve Beshear, the Northern Kentucky members of the Kentucky General Assembly, and any candidates for those offices. Previously, the Kenton Mayors Group and governments in Covington, Dayton, Elsmere, Erlanger and Fort Wright expressed their opposition to tolling.

"This puts everybody on notice that the communities of Northern Kentucky are adamantly against having the I-75 bridge tolled," said Fort Mitchell Mayor Tom Holocher. Beshear told the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Friday that he does not like tolls, but he said he is likely to support legislation that could lead to tolls for the bridge. The chamber supports the legislation. The bill calling for a toll on the Brent Spence passed the Kentucky House last week 84- Funerals lists services from Enquirer. BUEL BUEL Dona (nee George). A long time resident of Green Township, died on March 17, 2008 surrounded by her loving family at home in Lewes, DE. A highly accomplished concert pianist, Dona recently retired as an associate professor of music at Xavier University. While serving Chair of the Department of Music, Dona oversaw the construction of Edgecliff Hall, the University Music Center. A child prodigy, Dona began playing piano with the Cincinnati Symphony at age 12.

She later graduated from the UC College Conservatory of Music. She began her teaching career in the Oak Hills school district. She eventually moved on to Edgecliff College and ultimately Xavier University, where she remained for 25 years. Dona's love for the piano was rivaled only by her love for her husband of 44 years, Bevan Buel, daughters Andrea McGee and Kendra Baker and grandchildren Cydney, Jordan, Preston and Brigette. She filled the hearts of friends and family with music, love and laughter.

While she oft en brought concert goers to their feet in response to performances of Franz Liszt and other composers, it was at home and in the classroom where Dona's star shone brightest. A wonderful cook and avid gardener, Dona was equal parts motivator, confidant, mentor and maestro. She tended to the needs of her family and students with the same love, attention and creativity she brought to her George family recipes and backyard flower garden. A rare and pure soul, Dona will truly be missed. However, like a beautiful melody, Dona's spirit will linger in our hearts and minds forever.

Dona is also survived by her sisters, Kay Previte of Aurora, OH and Dee Schmidt of Columbus, OH. Condolences to www.neidhardgillenfu neralhome.com Tom Holocher, Fort Mitchell Mayor 14, but no lawmaker from Kenton, Boone or Campbell counties voted for it.

"Obviously, what's happening here is we're putting a Band-Aid on something that's broken, and it's not our position to apply the Band-Aid," said Fort Mitchell Councilman Bill Reis. "That belongs to the federal government." Reis noted that "one of the hang-ups" over the replacement is where to acquire the land for a bridge, something that he finds ironic when one considers the amount of land used for toll booths in the Chicago area. Holocher said toll booths mean more employees and administrative costs. "I just don't get it," he said, adding it's one thing to put a toll on a road built by a private company and another to levy a toll on an interstate. "(Congress) has got other things that they want to spend our money on, so they're trying to get local governments to pony up the money," Holocher said.

"If that's the case, they ought to get out of the business all together, and let us have the 18.5 cents (per-gallon gas tax)." 007 in memoriam Patricia V.
