James ter, II loved band SIMPSON sr By Rebecca Goodman Enquirer stuff writer BETHEL-The village of Bethel is flying its flags at half-staff and police officers are wearing black-banded mourning badges in memory of Mayor David W. Simpson, who died of an aneurysm Saturday at University Hospital. Mr.

Simpson, 51, had served as an auxiliary police officer in Bethel for 12 years and on its City Council in the 1980s. After being elected mayor in 2003, Mr. Simpson made Bethel's youth a priority. He started a recreation commission that provides activities to occupy them, especially during the summer. He also spent time with young people and persuaded some to get their high school diplomas, according to his daughter, Shanna Seib-ert of Liberty Township.

"He felt like he was making some headway with the youth," she said. Mr. Simpson was also a champion for Bethel's police department. As an auxiliary officer until his election as mayor, he "put his life on the line every week for 12 years for not a penny," his daughter said. As mayor, he tried to ensure that the officers received the equipment they needed.

Mike Shiverski, who has been village administrator since September, said he regarded Mr. Simpson as a friend and mentor. "He has taught me so much of -fj David Wil about standing on my own, being a leader, really finding my path and going with it no matter what the circumstances and opposition," Shiverski said. Mr. Simpson had owned Simpson Security in Amelia for the past 15 years.

A helicopter pilot and certified flight instructor, he also operated Simpson Helicopter Rides Tours. He taught students to fly and provided helicopter rides at carnivals and air shows. A graduate of Amelia High School, Mr. Simpson had worked for the BMOP Fire Department (now Central Fire EMS) and had been a police officer in Felicity and Williamsburg. He also ran Simpson Plumbing a business he inherited from his father until he closed it in 1991.

Other survivors include his wife, Sherry; a son, Jason Simpson, of Bethel; his mother, Marie Thompson, of Amelia; sisters, Emily Gustafson of West Virginia, Donna Wooton of Cincinnati, and Bonnie Jones of Batavia; brothers, Wayne Simpson of Hamersville, Ohio, Frank Simpson of Amelia, and Mark Simpson of Lebanon; and three grandchildren.
