the 1 a FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2011 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER LIVES REMEMBERED Melissa Hattersley, 47, teacher and mom By John Johnston MOUNT LOOKOUT Melissa Hattersley was a petite woman with an extra large love for children. Family and friends say that love was apparent in the educational and career path she chose; in her volunteer activities; and in the way she devoted herself to her children, Abigail, 13; Samuel, 10; and Benjamin, 8. Mrs. Mrs. HatHattersley tersley, 47, died of breast cancer Jan.

23 in her Mount Lookout home. She was diagnosed in May 2007. After a year of weekly chemotherapy treatments, which caused her to lose her hair, "we really thought she was in the clear," said her husband of 17 years, R. Brent Hattersley. But they learned in the fall of 2008 that the cancer had recurred and spread.

She began chemotherapy again, this time every two weeks. "She lived her life well, even the two years she was under treatment after she had been re-diagnosed," said her mother, Sandy L. Lensch of Troy, Ohio. "She was still there for her children. She was active in the school.

She did everything a mom would do. "She did say: I just wanted to live every day, for that day, as best I could." The Hattersley children attend Kilgour Elementary, where Mrs. Hattersley was a member of the PTA and for years co-chaired the spring flower show. She also worked with young children in Sunday school at Crossroads church in Oakley. "She loved spending time with kids and helping them learn," her husband said.

Mrs. Hattersley, a Dayton, Ohio, native, earned an art therapy degree from Bowling Green State University and a master's in early childhood education from the University of Cincinnati. Before her children were born, she worked as a preschool teacher. Through Crossroads, Mrs. Hattersley made three mission trips to Mamelodi, South Africa, where she volunteered at a preschool.

"The day before she was to leave for her second trip, she got the news the cancer had recurred. She still went," said close friend Jennifer Hansel of Anderson Township. Mrs. Hattersley made her third trip to South Africa last August. "She was so brave.

She didn't let cancer keep her. down," Hansel said. "She was quiet and reserved, but she was very strong." Her mother said her daughter handled the cancer "so gracefully, and so courageously. Never complained. Never said, 'Why If she were here to speak, I think she would say her faith and belief in God helped her to get through it." In addition to her husband, mother and children, survivors include her father, Gary A.

Lensch of Eaton, Ohio; and three brothers, Jeff Lensch of Eaton; Chris Lensch of Traverse City, and Joel Lensch of Bloomington, Ind. Cub Scout Pack 113 has established the Hattersley Family Children's Fund; donations can be made at any PNC Bank branch. Mrs. Hattersley's body was cremated. A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m.
