commissioner doctors told her she was cancer-free. But on July 28, she issued a news release announcing a recurr-ance of the ovarian cancer. She said that while undergoing chemotherapy treatments, she would be working on Mrs. Clemmons county business from her Hamilton home. 'She was a fighter right up until the end' BY STEVE KEMME The Cincinnati Enquirer HAMILTON Butler County Commissioner Janet Clemmons, who announced a week ago that her ovarian cancer had returned, died Monday morning at Christ Hospital.

She had entered the hospital Wednesday because of low blood pressure and breathing difficulties. "Within the last week, she deteriorated rapidly," said her daughter, Barbara Clemmons Gillette of Chicago. "She fought a long battle with cancer. She just got tired." Just three hours before her death at 11 a.m., Mrs. Clemmons had talked on the telephone from her hospital bed to County Administrator Derek Conklin about county business.

"She was a fighter right up until the end," Mr. Conklin said. Mrs. Clemmons, 64, a Republican reelected to her second four-year term in November, developed ovarian cancer in 1994. She conquered that.

But in December 1995, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy last year. At the end of her radiation treatments, In a telephone interview with The Enquirer that day, she said she had a "great attitude" about her situation and felt optimistic about her chances of recovery. "Death came quicker than we expected," County Commissioner Courtney Combs said. "We were hoping that things would work out for her and that this treatment would be effective. I'll miss her terribly." Mrs.

Clemmons' strong religious faith helped her in difficult times, including her three bouts with cancer, Mr. Combs said. "When she had a major decision to make, she always prayed on it," he said. "She was a giver. But she was very strong-willed and when she wanted something accomplished, she would dig in." The Butler County Republican Party's Central Committee has 45 days to choose someone to assume Mrs.

The former Newport assistant fire chief, one of the first to respond to the fire that eventually killed 165, spent the night of May 28, 1977, pulling bodies from a stack near the club's crowded Cabaret room. He was later forced into early retirement by emphysema and other fire-related ailments. "Beverly Hills was what did him in," said Newport fire Capt. Bill Ravenscraft, who remembered Mr.

Bridewell as a respected disciplinarian. "He was never the same after that." The 23-year Newport firefighter died Monday of respiratory ailments at St. Luke Hospital East, surrounded by members of the extended family that he cherished.
