His dedication to poor remembered BY SUSAN VELA The Cincinnati Enquirer MELBOURNE Anthony "Tony" Mazzaro, a Northern Kentucky University professor dedicated to social work, will be remembered for his love of life and commitment to the poor.

Mr. Mazzaro died Satur-dayat St. Elizabeth Hospice in Covington, surrounded by his friends and family. He was 55. He had been diagnosed with cancer in January 1999.

Friends, colleagues and relatives Mr. Mazzaro, son of Peter and Janet DeNuzio of Groesbeck, are mourning the loss. They said Mr. Mazzaro an associate social work professor and chairman of NKU's Department of Allied Health, Human Services Social Work was unique in the most special of ways. "He had that intangible something that connected with the emotions and spirit of others on a level that is unfortunately very rare," said his wife, Susan Mazzaro.

and dedication to the poor. "The ripple effect of the goodness he gave and spread through his teaching and training of social workers will be felt for generations." Mr. Mazzaro received a bachelor's in English and a master's in education at Xa-vier University. He also received a master's in social work from the University of Kentucky. He was teaching freshman composition at Xavier when he developed an interest in urban communities.

He became the first staff member at Newport-based Brighton Center, which continues to serve the area's needy, and was key in helping Appalachian families adjust to the area about 30 years ago, said Bob Brewster, Brighton Center's present executive director. Mr. Mazzaro joined NKU's faculty in 1975. While teaching, he held part-time positions with Big BrothersBig Sisters and Women's Crisis Center in Covington. Earlier this year, he became the recipient of NKU's Strongest Influence Award, a faculty award.

Ms. Jones enjoyed other sports as well. "She loved tennis, walking and cross-country skiing," said her son, Terry of Rochester Hills, Mich.

"She loved being outdoors." Son: 'She loved being outdoors' BY MICHELLE ROSE The Cincinnati Enquirer Growing up in Minnesota, young Rita Olson Jones learned to skate. Her love of figure skating continued when her family moved to Price Hill in 1945. Ms. Jones remained a member of the Cincinnati Figure Skating Club for 25 years and participated in local and regional competitions and exhibitions. She died Wednesday from Parkinson's disease at Brook- and the late Helen Moore De-Mar.

Passed away at his En-glewood, Florida residence on February 29, 2000, at age 98. He was a long time Cincinnati resident, most recently at Bethesda Scarlet Oaks Home. "He never forgot his humble origins and maintained a sense of fragility throughout his life," said family members. Mr.

Chabot died Friday from pneumonia at Cottingh-am Retiring Home Community in Sharonville, where he had been a resident for two years. He was 72. Born in Gardner, Mr. Chabot enlisted in the Michael beloved husband of Mary Carol ston Woods Sailing Association and Cincinnati Ski Club. Other survivors include two daughters, Lisabeth Chabot of Port Republic, and Patricia Kicklighter of Harbor Springs, two sons, Matthew of Clifton and Craig of Anderson Township; a brother, Richard of Oxford, and 10 grandchildren.

1949, he attended Boston University and earned a bachelor's degree in communications and public relations. In 1953, Mr. Chabot married his wife, Gloria, and they moved to Springfield Township in 1955. During his ownership of Norwood Hardware and Supply, Mr. Chabot was affiliated with several professional organizations, including Construction Specification Institute.

He was director of the Door and Hardware Institute. When he wasn't working, Mr. Chabot spent time sailing and skiing. "He loved being outdoors. We vacationed all over the states, sail boat attached to the car and skis in the trunk," said his wife of Green Hills.

Martin set a standard for academic achievement at Mariemont High School as teacher and principal. "The school was his brainchild. He mothered it and turned it into one of the leading schools in the state," said son David of Kenwood. In 1996, Mariemont school board members named a lecture hall for him.

Mr. Martin died Friday of pneumonia at Meadow-brook Care Center in Montgomery. The Mariemont resident was 88. He received his education degree from Ohio State University in 1934. He began teaching science at Plainville High School now Mariemont High in 1939.

Martin came principal at Mariemont High. In 1960, Mr. Martin was a trustee of the College Entrance Examination Board, which oversaw the implementation of the Scholastic Aptitude Test. In 1967, he was elected president of the Ohio Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a member of the Ohio Council on Education-from 1964 to 1968.

"His total focus was on the kids." said David Martin. "He kept wonderful friendships with his students, even after they graduated.
