WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1999 METRO THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Obituaries Nancy S. Kean, 37, dedicated herself to helping ill children Hospital social worker brought joy and hope BY REBECCA BILLMAN The Cincinnati Enquirer Nancy Sarah Kean's co-workers described her as bright, bold and boisterous. A social worker at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Ms. Kean was a cheerleader for her patients, especially the underdogs," said Patricia Myers, clinical director of social service at Children's. Ms.

Kean died Saturday at University Hospital after a short battle with cancer. The Madeira resident was 37. After children were treated for some sort of trauma or illness, they were sent to Ms. Kean, who helped them and their families adjust and recover as much normal function as possible. "It went beyond being her job," Ms.

Myers said. "She took a personal interest. Everyone loved how much she loved life and what she did." Ms. Kean's father died when she was a Ms. Kean child, and her mother died the year she graduated from college.

According to her aunt, Margie Baker of Louisville, she adopted a positive attitude and was determined not to be beaten. "She kept everybody afloat in the Ms. Baker said, "She always said, 'We'll work things "She was an unusual, compassionate human being. It was a joy to be around Nancy." Ms. Kean was born in Chicago and grew up in Bexley, Ohio.

She was a member of the 1979 class of Bexley High School. She attended the University of Cincinnati, receiving bachelor's and master's degrees in social work. She had worked for Children's since 1991. In addition, she was an on-call social worker with the psychiatric emergency response team with Franciscan hospitals. Ms.

Kean was the founder of the Children's Hospital Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group. Also surviving is a brother, Michael R. Kean of Cincinnati. Visitation is 2:30 p.m. today at the Old Chapel at Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet with a memorial service following at 3:30.

Memorials: The Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group, Development Department of Children's Hospital Medical Center, 3333 Burnet Cincinnati 45229-3039. Fr. James Brockman, 73, writer, teacher Hispanic ministry his special calling BY VICKIE MONDY The Cincinnati Enquirer The Rev. James R. Brockman, S.J., whose tireless work touched the lives of many people around the world, died Sept.

22 in Little Rock, from heart failure. He was 73. Father Brockman graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1944. He then started his studies at Xavier University, spending a short time there before entering the Army Air Corps in 1945.

He served for 30 months before returning to Xavier in 1946, where he stayed for the next year. In 1947, he joined the Jesuit novitiate in Milford. During his training there, he received a bachelor's degree in English from Xavier in 1951. He then received a master's in English from Loyola University in Chicago in 1959. He also earned a licentiate in philosophy in 1955 and a bachelor's of sacred theology in 1961 from West Baden College in Indiana, where he was ordained a priest in 1960.

As part of his Jesuit training, Father Brockman taught at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, and at Loyola Academy and St. Ignatius High School Chicago area. In 1963 he traveled to Arequipa, Peru, to serve as an administrator at Colegio San Jose. He Fr.

Brockman Fr. Brockman served until 1973, when he returned to the States and served as a chaplain at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and, later, as an associate editor of America magazine in New York City. In the late 1970s, Father Brockman traveled to El Salvador. It was there that he met Archbishop Oscar Romero. Archbishop Romero, along with many other Jesuits, became an outspoken protester against the government after military police murdered several Jesuits and members of the laity in the late 1970s.

Archbishop Romero was assassinated by military police in March 1980 while celebrating Mass in El Salvador. In June of that year, Father Brockman returned to El Salvador to research Archbishop Romero's life and work. He went to Nicaragua to begin writing, because conditions in El Sal- vador regarding the persecution of Jesuits had worsened. In 1981, Father Brockman returned to the United States, where he finished his book, The Word Remains: A Life of Oscar Romero, at Fordham University in New York City. He then moved back to Cincinnati in 1983 to continue writing.

He left in 1986 to serve the Hispanic ministry in the Gary, diocese. In 1993, he was called to serve as director of Hispanic Ministry for the Little Rock, diocese. "He moved the Hispanic ministry into the consciousness of the diocese, said the Rev. James Dixon, S.J., who served with Father Brockman at St. Ignatius in Chicago in the late 1960s and later joined him in Little Rock.

"On his own initiative, he started giving Masses in Spanish in areas with a large Hispanic population. The people deeply loved him." Surviving are a sister, Rosann True of Chicago; two nieces and a nephew. Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Milford Jesuit Cemetery in Milford. A memorial Mass will be held 7 p.m.

Oct. 6 at the St. Robert Bellarmine Chapel on the Xavier University campus. Kids, guns called deadly mix Moms who lost sons urge Taft to push restrictions BY ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS The Associated Press COLUMBUS As two mothers whose sons died in shootings looked on, state Sen. Eric Fingerhut on Tuesday urged Gov.

Bob Taft to keep campaign promises he made about reducing gun violence among children. The governor's office called Mr. Fingerhut's comments a partisan swipe having more to do with Statehouse politics than gun control. Mr. Fingerhut, D-Cleveland, made his remarks at a news conference held by The Prevention Institute, a Columbus-based research center that released a report calling for tougher laws regarding children and access to guns.

"Speeding Bullets, The Deadly Consequence of Children and Guns" said 145 Ohio children on average are killed each year by guns. Institute spokesman Bill Crimi said Ohio has failed to implement nine of 14 standard firearms laws passed by several other states, including a juvenile possession law passed by 30 states. Mr. Fingerhut referred to proposals that Mr. Taft offered in a May 1998 news conference in which he called for safe-storage and triggerlock laws.

"In the state of Ohio, we simply need to fulfill the pledges that each of us have made," said Mr. Fingerhut. Mr. Fingerhut also said that neither Mr. Taft nor Attorney General Betty Montgomery supported a Fingerhut-sponsored budget amendment last summer that would have helped local police develop strategies keep guns out of the hands of minors.

Montgomery spokesman Chris Davey said Mr. Fingerhut never asked for the attorney general's support. "We do recall him offering a couple amendments on juvenile issues and guns, but he didn't do us the courtesy of asking us for our support prior to introducing them on the floor," Mr. Davey said. Taft spokeswoman Mary Anne Sharkey said the governor is still committed to "all the proposals he laid out in the campaign, including trigger locks." Legislation dealing with juveniles and guns will be introduced separately from the governor's juvenile crime 5 Death Notices Leonard, passed away September 28, 1999, age 82, beloved husband of the late Miriam Adler, devoted father of Stephanie Behr of Potomac, MD and Phyllis Weisleder of Peoria, IL, dear grandfather of Jennifer and Jonathan and Aaron Weisleder.

"The governor felt the juvenile crime bill was way too important to get embroiled in a debate over gun control measures," Ms. Sharkey said. Linda Greggs of Columbus recalled how her son Jimmy, then 19, was killed in an August 1993 drive-by shooting just a few days before starting college.

Ms. Greggs, 50, likened raising a child to growing a plant, which once full grown "I tried to present to society, so that he'd be beautiful in society. And yet, still, society let me down, and my son was shot down." Rita Rathburn, also of Columbus, explained how her health has deteriorated since her son Anthony Rathburn, then 14, died in August 1997 when gang members shot him in a random attack. Institute's proposals The Prevention Institute, a research center in Columbus, released a report Tuesday with these proposals aimed at reducing gun violence: A law prohibiting any juvenile from possessing a firearm. Exceptions would include youths engaged in hunting or sport shooting or using a gun under an adult's supervision. Child access prevention, also known as safe-storage laws.

Would require adults to store loaded guns in a place that is inaccessible to children or to use a device such as a trigger lock to keep children from accidentally firing a gun. "Safe gun" standards. Would require gun makers to design their products so that a small child cannot pull the trigger or remove the gun's safety..
