Good Funeral Home In charge of ANDERSON She worked 52 years for recreation commission BY LUCY MAY The Cincinnati Enquirer Marian L. Ahlering spent 52 years working for the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. After she retired in 1993, she went right back to work as a volunteer.

It was that commitment to the city and its people that made Miss Ahlering "the most dedicated public servant I have ever seen," said Recreation Commission President Dan Gilday. "The city of Cincinnati could never replace her," he said. "She gave 24 hours a day, and she was like a walking encyclopedia." Miss Ahlering died Tuesday evening. The Columbia Tusculum resident was 76. She started as a field attendant at the recreation commission and number of organizations, including the city of Cincinnati's Riverfront Advisory Council, the League of Women Voters, United Way and ProKids.

"Over the years, she opened our eyes to the city in so many ways. We are so proud of the difference she has made, especially with her role in establishing countless playgrounds, senior centers, not to mention the riverfront," Ms. Browne said. A Cincinnati native, Miss Ahlering was a graduate of Walnut Hills High School and received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Cincinnati. At one time, she served as president of the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association.

Most important to Miss Ahlering was how the work of the recreation commission affected communities, Mr. Gilday said. "She was always the first person that would always think about other people," he said. "She was so sincere in her concern." Earlier this year, the Recreation Commission announced the dedication of the Marian L. Ahlering Recreation Complex at Lunken Airport to mark her unwavering service to the community.

Cindy Browne, Miss Ahlering's niece, said her aunt was thrilled. "It just is a great symbol of everything she stood for," Ms. Browne said. Over the past five years, Miss Ahlering did volunteer work for a Jennifer Lynn, beloved daughter of John R. and Sandra J.

THOMAS BELLEVUE 441-1730 491-4500 Jury to decide damages due man's mother BY JANE PRENDERGAST The Cincinnati Enquirer COVINGTON He came into the world a seemingly healthy boy that February day in 1972. What Scottie Davis' family wouldn't know until years later was that he was born with a rare genetic disease, a disease that would leave him mentally retarded.

His mother didn't know in time that he had PKU, a disorder that makes it impossible for him to process a part of protein. About one baby in every 15,000 in the United States is born with PKU, or phenylketonuria, according to the March of Dimes. It's a genetic disorder of body chemistry that makes it impossible for children to process a part of protein called phenylalanine. The phenylalanine builds up in the bloodstream, causing brain damage and mental retardation. A Kenton County jury is about to decide what amount of money Shirley Crim deserves for the lack of knowledge that left her son the aggressive, sometimes violent 26-year-old he is now.

The jury begins deliberating after lawyers' closing arguments this morning. At issue in the medical malpractice lawsuit against St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Dr. James Kelly is who should be responsible for the failure of Scottie's. positive PKU test to be reported.

Kentucky law has required since 1966 that hospitals report all positive PKU tests to the state health department. Ms. Crim, 42, says Scottie's care costs about $100,000 a year. She has rejected a settlement offer of $3.5 million. That amount is consistent with awards across the country in past PKU medical malpractice cases.

One, a decade ago in New Hampshire with virtually the same issues, resulted in the parents winning a settlement in the range of the one Ms. Crim rejected, said Mark Abramson, the attorney who handled it.
