Death HoHces Death Notices Death Notices Funerals For more complete information and address of the funeral director refer to the individual death notice below, Roberta Nolloth was compassionate landlady FUNERAL HOME OBITUARIES BY STEVE KEMME The Cincinnati Enquirer Roberta Nolloth tried to take care of the elderly and poor who lived in some of the six apartment buildings she owned in the Wallace Woods section of Covington. "She was like a mother to those people," said Rusty Iseral, her maintenance worker. "She'd take food to them. Sometimes she even took money out of her own pocket" to help them with expenses.

Miss Nolloth, 64, of Covington, died Thursday at University Hospital after driving into the back of a Kenton County sanitation truck in Covington. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, she was boating editor for The Enquirer and wrote a weekly column. "Her family was in boating," said Dick Macke, of The Enquirer's sports department and a Wallace Woods resident. "She was well-known in boating circles." She enjoyed covering hydroplane races on the Ohio River, said Bob Rankin, a former outdoors editor for The Enquirer who lives in Fort Thomas. "She was also quite well known as a candy-maker in her youth," he said.

"She made the candy in her basement." A friend, Bonnie Gray of Covington, said Miss Nolloth used to bring presents for her young daughter because she knew the family budget was limited. "Every Christmas and Easter, there was always something outside the door for my daughter," Gray said. "Bobbie would just sign it 'the Easter Bunny' or 'Santa Miss Nolloth had a soft heart for animals as well as children, Iseral said. "She fed every animal in the neighborhood," he said. "I'd get peanuts for birds, squirrels, everything.

Very seldom do you have the honor to get to know a person like her." Miss Nolloth leaves no relatives. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, HE. Southern Latonia.

They walked along Findlay Street to Race, then turned west from Race to take a short cut through narrow Eton Alley, Green said. Two young men were "up ahead of us in the shadow of the building," Green said. "We just walked up, and they turned around and started shooting at us.

We didn't say nothing to them, and they didn't say nothing to us. We just came through the alley at the wrong time." One ran almost at once, while the other fired at least five shots from a semiautomatic pistol, then followed, said District 1 Sgt. Jack Kraft. The group at first thought Dominique had been hurt when she fell in the alley, which was littered with glass shards and hypodermic needles. Green picked up the girl in.

his arms, then shifted her to ride piggyback to the Elm Street apartment a block away for help. "When I pulled her pants down, blood started coming out and I could tell she was shot," said Pam Abernathy, who lives in the apartment with Marlena Walker and Green's child. Abernathy applied pressure to the wound until emergency workers arrived, she said. Dominique was conscious Monday and talking with family, Green said, "but mostly she's sleeping." Toya Green, Dominique's mother, was at the hospital with her daughter, and could not be reached for comment. Police had no suspects in the case Monday.

Children being out in the streets late is not rare, say some. The problem is "very bad" in many parts of Over-the-Rhine during the summer, said Walter Huckaby, minister of Christian education at New Prospect Baptist Church at 1829 Elm St. Children or parents involved with drugs and the lack of air conditioning in the old buildings are contributing factors, he said. Heimlich said Williams' relatives were right when they complained that police patrols increased in the neighborhood in response to specific incidents, then waned. Curfew enforcement also isn't a priority, he added.

"We need more officers to enforce it," Heimlich said. "What is needed is a permanent beefing up of police presence in every area, or at least in every area that's got a serious crime problem." In the short term, Heimlich said, cutting funds for a tourism council and savings from the rapid indictment program could be diverted to provide $500,000 for targeted police overtime. Trusting: Trial begins in slaying if J1? I The Cincinnati EnquirerFred Straub CONTINUED FROM PAGE CI body Sept. 17 in the upstairs bedroom when she came to pick up her mother for a family reunion. Defense attorney Mike Kelly said he will not call Goff to the stand, but he told the jury that the state would be unable to link Goff unquestionably to the crime.

"The testimony will not establish that the array of evidence at the crime scene belongs to James Goff," Kelly said, because there are no eyewitnesses, fingerprints, DNA tests or a murder weapon. The eight-woman, four-man jury and four alternate jurors viewed Rutledge's farmhouse Monday, as well as the city street where police found Rutledge's car. By Monday afternoon, Judge William McCracken dismissed two women from the jury because they made offhand comments during the viewing. He did not disclose the comments. Two women replaced the dismissed jurors.

Two men remain as alternates. The trial is expected to take about another week. Prosecutors say that among others they will call as witnesses are Rutledge's family members and Goff's former prison inmates. Goff confessed to other inmates that he killed Rutledge, Peelle said. He had been in prison since shortly after the death on a drug conviction.

Prosecutors called Goff's former boss and co-worker at Butler's Home Furnishings as the first witnesses Monday. Harold "Jay" Butler Goff's former boss, said Goff was unreliable and appeared to be high on drugs the afternoon after Rutledge's furniture was delivered. Manuel Jackson, 26, said he and Goff delivered the sofa, chair and mattresses into the double-wide trailer on her proper-: ty. The great-grandmother was moving out of the deteriorating farmhouse, and Goff talked her into letting them go into the house to move an old bed frame, Jackson said. .1 A handcuffed James Goff is led Monday into the Clinton County Courthouse in Wilmington.

The woman agreed. While inside, Goff "was looking through things, snooping," Song: 4,500 attend pastoral music convention Jackson said. Goff had $20 when they left, Jackson said, so they bought crack and smoked it before Goff returned the furniture truck. Jackson said the next time he saw Goff was about 1:15 a.m. Goff bought $80 worth of cocaine at that time and admitted he had a stolen car, Jackson said.

During a court recess, Rutledge's sister-in-law said family members suspected Goff from the beginning because Rutledge had made comments about how nice he was to come inside and help her with her old bed frame that day. "She trusted everybody," said Marie Shaw, 82. "That was her trouble. She never was afraid of anybody." Peace." The song, written for the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing, is for sale at the convention, with proceeds benefiting a scholarship fund. This year's theme, "As a Story is Handed Down," focuses on the passing of music and tradition to future generations.

"We are here to connect our personal story to the great story of the acts of God in time," Funk said. "The great story must be handed down to the next generation and we do it through music." Association members some from as far as Holland, Canada and the Bahamas total 8,500.

They are church organists, choir directors, seminary music educators, campus ministers and military musicians. Although their backgrounds vary, the group is linked by a common thread a commitment to improving music and liturgy of the Catholic church at the parish level, Funk said. Gael Berberick, musical director of a church in Fort Sill, spent part of Monday leafing through children's music at one of the many exhibits of music publishers. Berberick came to "meet people who do the same thing I do, leading people in song" and to share her music, she said. A composer and mother of two, Berberick published a song titled "Hope for bMliMlltkiilMtkiaCBtMfJfejJkfalB la4LWJfc4a4BjMft4J41Mfe0'.
