Agnes Harmeyer (nee Ranly), brother of Harry Harmeyer, BY HAYES JOHNSON The Cincinnati Enquirer Byers didn't believe in hiding from his homosexuality or his religious beliefs.

He stood up for both, even when it earned him disdain. "He was very religious, and he never felt that God abandoned him," said William Miller of Cincinnati, a friend of Byers. Mr. Byers, 33, died of pneumonia March 9 at St. Joseph's Hospi-.

tal in Atlanta, where he moved three years ago. Services and cremation took place there last week. Cincinnati friends of Mr. Byers will gather Saturday at 11 a.m. for a memorial service at Church of Our Savior Episcopal in Mount Auburn.

Mr. Byers moved to Cincinnati in 1980 as a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a master's degree in art and theater. He had a degree in music from the Westminster Choir College in New Jersey. While in Atlanta, he was a founding member of Stonewall Cin- Church. He was a member of Integrity, a support group for gay and lesbian Episcopalians.

Miller said Mr. Byers was director of a gay men's choir and choir director at a Lutheran church in Atlanta. "Jason was basically a person who saw oppression in the gay-lesbian community and felt it needed to become more political in this city and stand up for the rights they are guaranteed under the Constitution," Miller said. "He was against oppression, be it sexual, racial or religious." Mr. Byers was featured with other members of Cincinnati's homosexual community in a special Enquirer report in 1982.

At that time, he was spokesman for the Greater Cincinnati Gay Coalition. He is survived by his parents, Walter and Betty Byers of Springfield, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Dan Juergens of Dayton, Ohio; and a brother, Charles, of Marietta, Ga. "I've never seen anybody put in that kind of dedication and never put in a minute of comp time or overtime. "He would have me call him at home at 2 a.m. if somebody got sick, say an inmate.
