Margaret Hall, 1960 Madi RENNER, Elsie T. June 14 Vorhis (Locklond) ger, Peggy Brlckweg, Debbie "If a kid got a sniffle out there, we'd all freak out," Raker said. Instead of the Four Corners Native American Ministry in New Mexico, Raker probably will take the nine youngsters to Montana or Oklahoma next month to work among Blackfoot or Kiowa Indians. They will go somewhere, because Raker is committed to building a "love affair between kids and missions." When he was a teen-ager, Raker spent two weeks in Haiti. "It was one of the watershed events in my life.

Even today, I can smell it, I can see it. I know the incredible effect missions can have on kids." The group will pick a new destination Sunday, he said. In the past two summers, Raker took the youth group to Henderson Settlement in southeastern Kentucky. There, they used their materials and energy to fulfill such basic needs as fence building and "a couple of -us put a screen door on a guy's tin shack." Friendship's group of 20 high school students has substituted the Cheyenne reservation at Green Grass, S.D., where an Episcopal priest has said he will welcome their help. Like Raker, Phillips was in no mood to miss a trip, because it would be the 12th or 13th year Friendship's youth group has traveled to help others.

Firefighters rescue horse from cistern BY CHASE CLEMENTS JR. The Cincinnati Enquirer GOSHEN Fire Chief Virgil Murphy says he has seen a lot of odd circumstances in 26 years as a firefighter, but never before has he been called to rescue a horse from a cistern no less. Members of Goshen Community Fire Department Inc. spent about 90 minutes Friday morning rescuing Bubba, a 10-year-old quarter horse, from an abandoned cistern at an Ohio 28 residence. Carol Berchtold, the horse's owner, said her daughter went out to feed Bubba and noticed that he had fallen into a 5-foot-deep by 4-foot-wide hole filled with water.

The hole had been covered with boards, but Bubba apparently knocked them loose during the night, Berchtold said. Murphy gave credit to Dyas Horse Supplies for supplying a back-hoe to dig out and around the cistern. From there, rescuers strapped the horse into a harness and lifted him out. Bubba, who suffered shock from the cold water and some scrapes from the brick-lined cistern, is expected to survive, Berchtold said. "He'll have to have some tender loving care and attention the next few days, but it will work out all right," she said.

Churches alter plans to work at reservation BY BEN L. KAUFMAN The Cincinnati Enquirer Uncertainty about health risks on the Navajo reservation have aborted church-building trips by at least two United Methodist youth groups from suburban Cincinnati. "The trip is canceled out there," the Rev. Jeffrey Raker, pastor of Miamitown United Methodist Church, said Friday. The decision followed myriad long-distance calls and conversations with worried parents, he said.

"I had a phone growing out of my ear last week." Ditto for the Friendship United Methodist Church youth group in Wyoming, leader Larry Phillips said. The cancellations were not unique, Raker said, in the wake of the respiratory illness that has killed at least 12 people in Navajo country in the past three months. Lots of churches are canceling plans to build and repair church buildings or to run vacation Bible schools, he said. son 45206. Elden A.

Visita standing somewhat. tion B.J Meyer Sons (Colonial) CONTINUED FROM PAGE Bl (HOME), the report is a clarion call for action on the housing front. Politicians have to have the backbone to encourage low-income housing throughout the suburbs and the city despite community opposition, Irvine said. "The city of Cincinnati tends to follow the line of least resistance," she said. "If a housing project runs into resistance in a non-inner-city neighborhood, they tend to cave in.

We've just got to stop doing that." She points, for example, to council support behind residents fighting a low- to moderate-income housing development on Guerley Road and some community opposition to Family Housing Partners' plans for moderately priced homes geared to single parents in South Fairmount. Rusk said the key to reversing Cincinnati's prospects is not new jobs and enterprise zones but pushing affordable housing everywhere, particularly in the Tillery, however, disagrees with Rusk and Irvine's interpretation of the data. "I don't think that this whole issue ought to turn on where housing is located. It ought to turn on where jobs are located and where economic training is geared for the future," he said. Forty cities have passed the point of no return, in Rusk's view.

He said that point is reached when population drops 20 or more from its peak, minority population Funeral Home, 3726 Warsaw Irene (nee McMullen), widow of Lorah A. She credits UC's pre-technical program with getting her through so far; she learned about it from a brochure she saw at her son's day-care center. The program started about 10 years ago to help disadvantaged students through their freshman year and is funded by the state with federal money through the Ohio Jobs Program.

Students may choose to go into technical programs, such as legal assistant and computer programming, or work on credits leading to a bachelor's degree. Class subjects include study skills and critical thinking. Counselors provide intensive guidance. Students in the program start out following the same core curriculum, which helps them support each other. About $40,000 of the program's $219,000 budget is used to help students meet financial needs not covered by state and federal grants.

About 70 of the pre-technical program students, 25-30 people per quarter, register for a second year, and about half are still in college after two years, said Richard Lang, the program's director. "It helps them through the time when college can really be a confusing ball of wax to somebody not familiar with college," Lang said. "Wraynette did very well." By the second and third quarter, Lang said, teachers were commenting about Brown's ability. Brown is looking forward to a summer break from her school-year routine of rising at 3 a.m. to study before a day jammed with household chores, parenting, a full-time class schedule and working afternoons at UC.
