Hear nranrifather Of Sewers CONTINUED FROM PAGE B-l "The answer is no," Newfarmer said. "I am not at liberty to talk about it. There is an investigation going on of some of the companies involved. I have probably said more now than the lawyers want me to say." If the investigation results in criminal convictions, officials of the companies could face up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million, said Ed Boldt, FBI special agent in Cincinnati. Under the federal Clean Water Act of 1987, criminal charges can be brought for: Negligently or knowingly three grandchildren.

March 3, Nor did he know what other enforcement action against local companies could be called for, he said. John Dowlin, president of the Hamilton County Commission, said the investigation would be helpful only if it aimed to further reduce the toxic waste in the sewer system. It would not be helpful, he said, if it was aimed at putting someone in jail. "I have no interest in a witch hunt," he said. Sheila McLaughlin and Howard Wilkinson contributed to this ivy.

Age 4 years, resiuem of Cincinnati, OH formerly of npiipvup. KY. Memorial serv dumping hazardous waste into the sewer in excess of permit levels. Knowingly endangering someone through violating regulations. Falsifying records that have to do with permits and discharges to the sewer.

Since December, MSD has stepped up enforcement against industries that violate their permits, and some companies have been referred to the Attorney General's Office and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for enforcement action. "Food stamps will continue, but if you don't have a place to store or cook food, it's traumatic," Skirtz said. Cincinnati Mayor Dwight Til-lery also has gotten involved in the fight to restore GA. "We have limited resources, and we can't begin to pick up the areas cut by the state and federal government," said Tillery, who plans to meet with Gov. George Voinovich on April 1 to discuss the cuts. "The city is being put in an unfair situation because the state can't manage its budget," Tillery said.

"We'll continue to fight and press for this, because next year the climate is going to be more severe." it hasn't materialized." Also troubled is the Drop-Inn Center homeless shelter, which already has difficulties holding the more-than 250 people who show up on bad-weather nights, said Pat Clifford, center administrative coordinator. The Over-the-Rhine center expanded a year ago and is already too small, he said. "Every time we expand, they put more people on the street," Clifford said. "We're expecting to be the heaviest-hit because GA is directed toward single people and we have an open-door policy." Many of the people having their GA cut will continue to get food stamps. Alice Skirtz, director of Social Services at the Salvation Army, said that might prompt some people to illegally sell the food stamps to take care of rent CONTINUED FROM PAGE B-l for food at kitchens and food banks, said homeless and poverty advocates.

And those same advocates say they are even more strapped because of the influx of people affected by other economic problems, such as layoffs. Juanita Arrington, director of Charlie's Three-Quarters House, a Clifton shelter for recovering addicts, said the cuts might reverse the progress that has been made to help rehabilitate drug and alcohol abusers. "It's rough, and it's going to get a lot rougher," Arrington said. "We may not be here in a few months, because 97 of our men are on GA. I don't know what we are going to do.

We have enough funds to carry us until July. We are hoping for some kind of grant, and ing f-unerai Home is serving me family.
