blazes rage less than expected THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Warm, dry weather once again helped fan at least 18 fires in the eastern third of Kentucky, forestry officials said Sunday. The largest fire covered about 70 acres in Pike County at Indian Creek. Donald Hamm, director of the state division of forestry, said the number of fires over the weekend were less than expected. "I expected twice as many fires," he said. "It appears the people have burned everything they're going to burn," he said.

Hamm said that because of the high temperatures people were staying indoors i instead of burning trash and other material outside. Hamm said winds were not very strong, decreasing the chance of fire spreading. Four planes, one in each eastern Kentucky district, were being used to spot the blazes, he said. There were three fires reported in Knott County and another in Pike County near Fish Trap Lake. No buildings were in the fires' path and crews were working to contain the blazes, officials said.

Purdue-NASA ties old as space agency THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.Purdue University's ties to the national space program date from the inception of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, officials and alumni say. Purdue not only claims 16 astronauts as alumni, but many other graduates have worked with NASA designing rockets, training flight crews and sometimes advising Presidents about the future of space travel, according to Skip Grandt, the head of Purdue's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Graduates of Purdue, one of the earliest and largest aeronautics schools i in the country, have gone to work in droves for NASA, Grandt said. Three alumni got in on NASA's ground floor, when funding for the space program was plentiful and there was an urgency about beating the Soviets into space. Kenneth Kleinknecht and Warren J.

North went to NASA from the old National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Donald E. Stullken went to NASA after working as a civilian scientist with the U.S. Navy. All three have seen the national space program change dramatically since the 1940s and '50s.

The bureaucracy and red tape have grown enormously, they told the Journal-Courier in Lafayette recently. "People started worrying about overtime, whether they were going to get paid," Stullken said. "In the old days, if there was a job 1 to be done, you did it." North helped pick America's original seven astronauts more than 25 years ago. He said the first astronauts were chosen on the basis of flight experience and academic background. Even Chuck Yeager, who has since become the nation's top test pilot, was ineligible because he had no college degree.

Now, he said, astronauts are selected for their scientific and technological expertise. North, a 1947 graduate of Purdue, directed flight crew operations for the space shuttle program until his retirement in 1985. Kleinknecht, a 1942 graduate, was manager of the Skylab programs. He had a reputation as a stickler for safety while working on the shuttle project before his retirement. In fact, an article in People magazine in 1981 was subtitled: "In NASA no one is as mean and hard-nosed as Kenny Kleinknecht." Although Kleinknecht and the others say the January explosion o1 the space shuttle Challenger may have dealt the nation's space program a setback, they are confident the program will rebound and prosper.
