But he didn't count.on the Indians' defense taking a season-long hike.

"Our defense has proved to be our downfall this year," said Bradbury, in his third year at Fairfield. Opponents average nearly 65 points a game to around 55 for the Indians. Consequently, Fairfield's record is 4-7. "WE WERE hoping to have about a .500 year," Bradbury said. "We knew it would be a rebuilding year after we lost three seniors who started last season." Last year, Fairfield held opponents to around 50 points per game with a tough man-to-man alignment.

But tltis season, Bradbury has been forced to change things a little. The Indians haven't been offen- ing slack in Smith's Joining Whisman andi Smith in trie Indians' starting linau'p jire 6- foot-2 Steve Huber and -10, Rusty at forwards. Smith sustained a deep bruise on his leg while quarterbacking the football team and missed the Indians' first four games. Smith currently leads Indian scorers with an average of 16 game. "Lou, I'd like to say a few nice things about Ed Badger, the new UC basketball coach," writes H.J.R., former UC student and athlete. "He's got more class in his little finger than his immediate predecessor at UC had in his entire 180-pound body. "It's a delight to read or listen to coach Badger's post-game interviews.

Although his Bearcats lost real heartbreakers to Michigan State and North Carolina State, two of the five top-ranked teams in the country he made no attempt to alibi or put the hat on the officials. "Badger Is strictly class and, although the Bearcats were slapped with a two-year suspension by the snoopln' NCAA, and had two of their starters kicked off the team, Badger refused to pull out the old cyrin' towel. Instead, he said: 'We'll regroup and I'm sure we'll do okay the remainder of the season. "Yep, Lou, he's my kind of coach. And I'm sure the many fine UC basketball fauns will be singing his praises before the curtain goes down in the 1978-79 basketball season.

sonnel man to stay out of the game very long. What's going to happen to George Allen? It doesn't look as though he'll be working for anyone but CBS next year even though he keeps telling insiders that he has a job locked up. It Isn't the Giants. They will be looking for an operational manager before coming to a decision on a new coach. The question is: why is Andy Robustelli hanging on to help make the derision? DAN REEVES, the offensive-minded assistant coach at Dallas, has better than an even chance to land a head coaching job somewhere next season.

His situation is a lot like that of Bill Arnsparger's a couple of years ago when the Giants couldn't talk to him until after the Super Bowl. Al Davis has spent most of this past week prowling the practice fields at the Senior Bowl. He will take his time naming a successor to John Madden and will interview anywhere from 14 to 17 candidates. I still think the winner will be a young assistant coach just like Madden was 10 years ago. A last thought about the playoffs: Tom Landry, Bum Phillips, Chuck Noll and Ray Malavasi had one thing in common all of them made their reputations as defense-oriented coaches.
