"We have reason to be-1 i DeMartino said, "that the state we are now in will give us a full opportunity to be heard which we haven't had." Miss Scarpetta. 32, emotionally recalled her feelings when she decided to give up her unborn child. She said she was a student at Columbia University, and her parents knew nothing of her pregnancy.

"I was frightened," she said. "I was alone. I thought I was doing what was best for her. I thought this way she would grow up never having any problems. Now I know that no one can avoid problems." She said that when the baby was four days old, she took her to the Spence-Chapin Adoption-Agency and left her there.

Later, she said, "I began to think of her there, with no home, and I felt terrible. I went and begged them to let me see her." But the adoption people, she said, did not think it advisable for her to see the baby again. Miss Scarpetta recalls that it was only two or three weeks later she returned to the agency and told them she wanted her baby-back. But Lenore was already in the DeMartinos' home. Although under state law adoption is not final for six months, they refused to surrender the child.
