But a bloodthirsty crowd persuaded him to change his mind. Peters, 19, decided to commit suicide following a dispute at the gas station where he worked. At dusk Wednesday night, he climbed a 104-foot water tower in Kassel. Passersby saw Peters on the tower and called police and firemen.

Hundreds of curious persons gathered at the base of the tower. Firemen tried to persuade him to come down, he refused. Then the boy's girl friend called to him, "Dont do it. Come down. Everything will be all right, I'll help you." Peters began to climb slowly down the iron steps.

Two firemen went up to meet him and gave him a cigarette. He said he would follow them down. Satisfied with this promise, they returned to the ground. But when Peters started to follow them, the crowd, eager for sensation, began booing and Jeering. With each 6tep, the taunts grew louder.

"Jump, you coward!" a man in the crowd hooted. Pp" hesitated. 'on't listen to them!" police and firemen yelled. "Come down!" But Peters listened to crowd. He hesitated.

Then quickly scrambled up the ladder to a parapet beneath the tower, turned and Jumped. Although he fell Into a safety net held by firemen, he died later of internal injuries.
