Police Clerk Dick Puryear, acting as referee, distinguished himself by knocking a big knife out of one of the contestant's hands, after which the battle proceeded more or loss in accordance with Marquis of Queenbury rules.

The contest was a dandy for a few rounds. Both boys were game and were swinging from the floor. But the whole thing grew tame later as both battlers, being out of condition, started puffing and hanging on. At this point Detective Floyd Kiswonger and Patrolman Paul Steuer of the Crime Bureau halted the slugfest, arresting both fighters on charges of disorderly conduct.
