J. Wesley Uilrdnrr, Alkr. DISTATdl TO THE XNgt'IREB. Morsantown, W. July 27 After years of life In West Virginia, the major lurt of which hns been spent on the campus of West Virginia X'nivcrsity or Its educational predecessor, Mrs.

Elizabeth I. Moore continues to live in the atmosphere that she hus loved and in which sho lias seen the ideals of her youth develop Into successful fruition. One of the founders of co-education in West she gave her life to the teaching of boys and girls of a former generation, and when the span of her active years had passed she handed her Ideas, her enthusiasm and the benefit of her experience to her daughter, Miss Susan Maxwell Moore, yho has given more than SO years of her life to the teaching profession nd continues to be part of the educational staff at West Virginia Cnl-versity. The story of the teaching career of Mrs. Elizabeth Moore reads like book of romance.

It goes back to the days of the Civil "War when she vas lady principal and an instructor at the Woodburn Seminary, which a part of the present university fcampus. Confederate troops were in the vicinity of Morgantown, where they had been carrying on pillaging expeditions and plundering farms. burned the bridge across the Wonongahela River at this point and (overflowed onto the school grounds. Mrs. Moore served the entire, party with bread and butter and coffee, i.nd after thry had partaken amply she called upon them as Southern gentlemen to withdraw from the achool grounds and not molest the young ladles of the buildings.

Her appeal did not fall on deaf ears and the entire party withdrew without having touched a building or seen tme of the girl students, who had ibeen gathered in the main school building before the arrival of the troops. Educated at Wheeling Seminary, Virginia, Mrs. Moore came to Morgan-town shortly after her marriage in 1S53, and became associated with her lather, who was rrinclpal of the Monongalia Academy. In 1857 her father nd two other men bought the thir-teen-acre manor of Thomas P. Reay, end on it was built Woodburn Seminary, which later became Woodburn Hall of We3t Virginia University, and Still is in daily use.

Mrs. Moore assisted her father In teaching until his death and then went to Pittsburgh, where she taught In a girls' seminary in East Liberty for a number of years. Later she returned to Morgantown to make her home with her daughter, who had started her teaching career. After teaching for a few years at Tttount Holyoke and at Denlson University, Miss Susan Maxwell Moore, the daughter, had come to Morgan-town to teach and became dean of women, and at the same time Instructor in the school of music. Miss Moore remained as dean of women for 20 years, but relinquished this duty in J023, and has since devoted herself to llie teaching of music, which she still continues, That the State of West Virginia was jiot slow to recognize the service given Ty Mrs.

By recommendation from the Vest A'irginla Alumnae Association jthe State Board of Control, by unanimous consent, named the new building Elizabeth Moore Hall, and today monument to the venerable lady serving upward of 600 girls, where fcwlniming, dancing and other forms of physical education are taught. Moore founded and which is flowing outward and beyond with an ever-broadening vista and an ever-increasing enthusiasm. Mrs. Moore at the age of 97, continues to take an active interest in university affairs, and makes it a point to be in attendance at functions whenever her health and the weather permit. Retaining all her faculties to a marked degree, Mrs. Moore enjoys the pleasure of a wonderful memory and it is her delight to gather about her a cluster of girl students and to extoll to them the values of education and her own dear West Virginia.

Devout In her religious affiliations, Mrs. Moore takes an Interest in the work of the Westminster Foundation of the Presbyterian Church on the campus, and her fireside is the gathering place on cold winter evenings for many of the girls away from home and in need of Christian guidance and a grandmother's faith.
