He might have dropped his plan to murder John Lennon. Instead, he could have taken his autograph and returned to the sunshine. "(I) wanted to get the hell back to Hawaii," Chapman told Barbara Walters, "and go back to (my) wife and say: 'Look.

Look what I've And then forget the whole thing." Instead, he fired five shots into Lennon's back. A stunned doorman took away the gun and told Chapman to just leave. Mark Chapman says he understands why he's hated.

"I liked John Lennon at one point myself," he told Walters. "Before this thought of murder came I would be very angry at anybody who did anything to him." Then why did he do it? The short answer is that he became obsessed with Lennon and with Holden Caulfield, the Catcher in the Rye youth who hated phoni-ness. He decided Lennon was a phony, shot him and pulled out the book. "I opened it, I guess trying to read." The longer answer? Coming from a troubled home in Georgia, Chapman prospered as a staffer at a camp for Vietnamese refugees. When the camp closed, he tried college.

"I had a major depression, where it didn't lift for like three weeks. (I had been) in charge of a staff of 15 people; when I got to school, I felt like a nobody." So he bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii, where he tried to commit suicide. He was stopped and eventually found work and romance. Mark and Gloria Chapman have been married 13 years; "she is my gemstone," he told Walters. Still, he hit her and he plunged into obsession.

On Dec. 8, 1980, he waited to get Lennon's autograph. "This is the toughest part to deal with," he said. "He was very cordial to me. He wasn't a phony." That's when Chapman could have changed his mind, returning to Gloria and Hawaii.
